What exercise/nutrition plans did you try before joining CrossFit Blackbear?
Before CFBB, I had personal trainers and regular gym subscriptions. I had a Peleton, like the rest of the world when COVID hit. I have used the SIMPLE App, which is intermittent fasting, NOOM, eating/health coach, yoga, and on and on…I’d stay consistent for a while and then move on from it. Lots of money, little results.
How would you describe your health and fitness level on a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being poor and 10 being excellent) and why, before joining CrossFit Blackbear?
I would say I was a solid 4-5 before CFBB. I say that because my job is somewhat physical, I would take yoga classes and such but I had high cholesterol (300) and my cardio ability was lacking and the weight kept creeping on about 5 LBS per year. Especially as I moved into perimenopause and menopause. I was also in pain a lot. Knees and low back mainly, especially descending stairs.
What made you choose CrossFit Blackbear over other options?
I came to CFBB, honestly, because it was the first website that came up when I started searching and Heather called me almost immediately when I inquired. I started searching because my gym nurse practitioner gave me “the what for” at my annual checkup.
She’s the same age as me and is in very good shape. She told me loudly with profanity that she would prescribe HRT but I had to start lifting weights and eating to the macros. She is the one that kicked my butt into starting. 😛 Heather just made it easy to get on board at my no sweat intro.
What do you feel makes CrossFit Blackbear unique as opposed to other gym facilities?
CFBB meets you where you are. No matter your excuses, reasons, and delay tactics, as long as you show up, which is 98% of it, they will move you through your workout without judgment or shaming.
And showing up for yourself is hard. It’s such a mental game and CFBB community knows this.
I have basically crawled into the gym before and said I barely made it here and the response was, we are just going to move your body today; before you know it you are through the workout.
What is the biggest improvement you have noticed in yourself since joining CFBB?
My biggest improvement is the lack of pain in my daily life. I have gained strength, lost a little weight, and lowered my body fat a little. This is a long game. Consistency and discipline are the key for me. I just keep coming back and they guide you through the rest.
What do you think it is about CFBB that keeps you coming back?
Their consistency and discipline help me be consistent and disciplined. I think this is the biggest reason. I know what the drill is.
The workouts are different every time but I know I will be at a station with a coach that will help modify an exercise and keep me moving to the end.
The vibe is very chill and there is no drama. It’s easier to completely focus during my workouts. I usually turn on my Do Not Disturb on my phone so I am not interrupted. Lately, I do not even bring my phone to my station, I leave it in the other room.
What would you say to someone who thinks they are not “fit” enough to start their journey with CFBB?
I would say and have said, to people, just start. CFBB meets you where you are, truly. There is always a modification for any exercise. You are challenged to push yourself to your limits without being limited. You are stronger than you think!
