Our Story

Crossfit Black Bear was founded in 2012 as a non-profit CrossFit affiliate at the University of Maine.

Working with the University we were able to offer free classes to full time University students and community members active at the Recreation Center.

We were founded with the mission to make exceptional programming and coaching accessible to the every University student and community member.

Our Transformation

In Summer 2016, CrossFit Black Bear became the first non-profit CrossFit affiliate in Maine to become a commercial affiliate.

This was only possible with the support of our members who made CrossFit Black Bear a successful program at the University.

We are now located in the Old Town Plaza (between the Hannaford and YMCA). Only 5 minutes from the University of Maine at Orono campus, and 6.5 miles from Bangor off I-95 N.

“I graduated from Cornell University with a B.S in Civil/Environmental Engineering. Okay, a little unconventional, but not too out of the ordinary. After all, many folks realize in college that they want to do something different.

Well, not only that, but I then attended the University of Maine for a M.S in Civil Engineering. What?! Double whammy!

But wait, it gets better…following UMaine I worked as an Engineer in the competitive consulting industry for a few years. So yeah, not very typical.

It is my passion to help others improve their lives through fitness and healthy living. At Cornell University, I was on the Varsity Rowing team where I developed a true enjoyment for fitness and the challenge to improve myself everyday. I was able to push myself farther than I ever thought I could, resulting in an Eastern Sprints National Championship in 2009.

While I am no longer a Division 1 Collegiate athlete, I find the same personal satisfaction when I help others reach milestones they never thought possible. I have made it my own personal goal to positively influence as many people as possible in our community in the realm of health and fitness.

Everybody has a different life story when it comes to health and fitness. I want to meet you where you are on this journey, and together we can make those fitness goals a reality.”

“You know what’s crazy about CrossFit? Hold up now, hear me out!

Everyone who finds CrossFit came to it in a way that’s entirely unique to them. And that diverse mix of motivations, desires, and aspirations are what make CrossFit and it’s community extraordinary.

My road to CrossFit started after the end of my soccer career. I played soccer all through my youth and into college. After I graduated I needed something to keep me active. I tried triathlons, and some bodybuilding, but I struggled to find something that gave me the same feeling of competition combined with the team atmosphere. That’s when I stumbled upon CrossFit – or it stumbled into me (you can ask Josh about that one).

CrossFit pushed me further physically and demanded that I work harder than I ever thought I was capable. But the piece that mattered the most to me was that the community opened their arms to me. They gave me the support system I was craving!

This accepting and supportive atmosphere is now my driving force. Everything I do now for CrossFit Black Bear is to help each and every one of our members feel that they are welcome and they belong. I want them to push themselves in workouts and know that their friend working their butt off next to them will pick them up if they need it.

Everyone’s journey to the CrossFit community is different. But knowing that they have supporters once they arrive is so important. Regardless of your reason for being here, we’ve got your back. And that’s what makes CrossFit crazy. Crazy awesome.”

“Hi, my name is Jimmy. I graduated from the University of Maine with a BS in Kinesiology, Exercise Science in the Spring of 2016, and am currently going for my Masters in Kinesiology. I’ve been a competitive athlete my whole life, primarily in the pool.

I started doing CrossFit at the University of Maine in 2012 when CrossFit Black Bear was just a small corner room inside a very large gym. At the time I was training for an obstacle course and figured that CrossFit would be the perfect way to do so. After the first workout I got hooked on CrossFit.

My passion for CrossFit took me up and down the east coast (technically just down to Virginia and back) learning, coaching, and lifting heavy with some really cool people. My travels, as some would say have given me an “odd obsession” with weightlifting (the clean & jerk, and the snatch).

On a regular day you can find me bouncing around the gym, coaching, training and talking someone’s ear off about weightlifting.”

Any goal worth completing is not going to be easy. If you think living your dreams is simple and you are entitled to it, you will never achieve it. The first step is dedicating yourself to a goal and knowing that it will not be easy to complete it, but it will be worth it.
